What makes you happy from the inside out?
You might be able to come up with a list of 10 things right off the bat, or you might need to really give it some thought, but it’s worth considering: What can you do to make your heart (and your head) happier this year? Happier people are less likely to develop heart disease, according to a Columbia University Medical Center study, so a happy heart can also equal a healthy heart.
Start by listening carefully. Have you been heeding or ignoring that little inner voice that encourages you to try something new, make a change or speak up for yourself?
If you’re looking for some creative ideas for a happier heart and life, consider these:
•Try a “pet prescription:” Owning a pet can lower blood pressure, anxiety and your risk of heart attack, boost immunity and even spark new relationships (think dog park on a Saturday morning).
•Practice not being perfect. Trying to be perfect only creates stress. Practice letting go and appreciating the “good” in “good enough.”
•Choose positive people. Hang out with friends who make you feel more optimistic and upbeat rather than those who drain your time and energy.
•Cultivate a green thumb. Houseplants can clean dust and pollutants in the air while the color green can increase feelings of creativity and happiness while decreasing stress levels, according to a Washington State University study.
•Laugh. Giggle, chuckle or guffaw. About 15 minutes of daily laughter can boost flow to your heart, strengthen your abs and make you feel happier from the inside out.
