Common Concerns for Women Post-Menopause

While the hot flashes may have tapered off, women may have a new set of concerns, changes and challenges post-menopause. Following are some of the questions we hear at Clinic Sofia; please contact us if you have further questions or
concerns. How will I know when I’m post-menopausal? Generally, when you have not had a period for at least one year, or if you’ve had your ovaries surgically removed. We can also measure your levels of FSH or follicle stimulating hormone, which increases as the ovaries shut down, through a simple blood test. What should I expect after menopause? Every woman is different, but in general, you will likely see a slowing of the hot flashes, low energy, and  confusion that can sometimes mark the period of menopause. Some women experience hair thinning or loss at this time due to hormonal imbalance, stress or diet; likewise, insomnia that started in menopause may linger. At the same time, breast pain or other symptoms associated with a monthly period should dwindle or vanish.

What can I do about vaginal dryness? This may be the most common complaint of women post-menopause and can include itching, dryness and difficulty with sex. Lubrication and medication can both support vaginal health – and a healthy sex life – for years to come. How often should I continue to see my doctor? Just because you’re no longer having a period or pregnant doesn’t mean you should halt regular doctor’s visits. Preventative screenings and check-ups including breast exams, mammograms, pelvic exams, screening for colon cancer, cholesterol checks and discussion about your health remain important. Your doctor can also look for ovarian cysts, which are common in post-menopausal women and generally benign, but always worth keeping an eye on. Talk to your doctor about your schedule, but plan on coming in once a year.
