Ask Sofia: What Will My Postpartum Check Consist of?

Scheduled anywhere from two to six weeks after you deliver, your postpartum check-up provides a great chance to see how you’re doing physically and emotionally. If you had a Cesarean section delivery, you will likely see your doctor earlier to check your incision. Otherwise, this appointment will serve as an annual exam and will include a pelvic exam, time to talk and check on your overall recovery from childbirth. Your doctor will likely discuss breastfeeding, birth control, your overall mood and physical health, and will check that your uterus is returning to its pre-pregnancy size.  “This is also the perfect time to ask any and every question you might have on your mind, from changes in your breasts to birth control options to sex,” said Dr. Jennifer Smolinski.

“We also don’t want you to feel like you have to wait six weeks to talk to us. Please call anytime if there is something more pressing that you’d like to discuss.” While it may seem too soon, your postpartum check-up can also be a prenatal visit, if you and your partner are thinking of expanding your family within the next year. Make sure you bring a list of any questions related to post- or pre-pregnancy, especially if you’re exhausted and struggling with that new “mom brain.” And yes, it’s ok if you bring your baby – we love to see them – although this visit can also be a nice time just to focus on yourself.
