Changing Pap Smear Guidelines

When patients visit Dr. Jewelia Wagner, many of them ask about Pap smear guidelines, wondering how often they need to get one. “The guidelines on Pap smears changed recently, so it’s no wonder there are a lot of questions on this topic,” she said. “I’m happy to report that most patients no longer need an annual pap, however, we still want to see you every year to make sure everything else is going well and to offer assistance with any issues.” A screening for cervical cancer, a Pap smear involves collecting cells from the opening f the cervix, which are then examined under a microscope.

The United States Preventative Services Task Force recommends women ages 21 to 65 receive a Pap smear every three years, however, women over the age of 30 can go as long as five years if they receive a HPV or human papillomavirus test at the same time and both tests are normal. Women ages 65 and up who have had three negative Pap smears in a row and who aren’t considered at risk no longer need the screening.  Regardless, as Dr. Wagner and all of the other doctors at Clinic Sofia can attest, it’s important to receive an annual exam whether you’re getting a Pap test done or not. “We love to see our patients every year, to hear what’s going on in their lives, and to help promote health, wellness and wholeness,” Wagner added.
