Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MonaLisa Touch?

Like a dermatologist using a non-ablative facial laser, the MonaLisa Touch laser is a CO2 fractional laser used for cell regeneration by damaging collagen and stimulating the vaginal mucosa. This may sound like a bad thing, but the process of damaging collagen stimulates the mucosa cells to repair themselves and regenerate new collagen. The interaction with the laser is, in fact, the ideal method to stimulate the collagen contained in the vaginal walls for the rehydration and rejuvenation of functional tissue restoration.

What is the treatment plan?

During the minimally invasive treatment, a vaginal probe is inserted to administer the laser that stimulates healing of the vaginal wall. Patients initially receive three five-minute treatments at six-week intervals in the office, with an annual maintenance treatment as needed. After one year of annual maintenance, your provider can suggest how many sessions should be performed again.

Who is a candidate?

Available at Clinic Sofia’s office in Edina, the MonaLisa Touch laser is effective for those struggling with vaginal issues, urinary incontinence, or pain due to perimenopause or menopause or following certain cancers and childbirth. In any case, it will be up to your provider, after careful examination, to evaluate and recommend the best treatment plan for you.

What are the benefits? Downsides?

Many people report significantly reduced vaginal pain as well as increased moisture and greater pleasure during intimacy following the treatment. Clinic Sofia decided to offer the MonaLisa Touch because we were impressed by the results and the clinical research. The experts in female pelvic health tout its effectiveness, and we know there is a need from talking with our patients.

As for downsides, the laser is virtually painless and there are little to no side effects – a numbing cream can be applied prior to the treatment to reduce any discomfort. Many patients have reported to have resumed their normal routine after one to three days. During the healing period, it may be recommended to avoid lifting weights or other activities, such as taking a hot bath, or physical exercise. Your provider will give you specific indications for a speedy recovery.

Please note, however, that at this time the procedure is not typically covered by insurance. Patients may choose to use dollars from their Health Savings Accounts just as they do for other out-of-pocket healthcare costs. Many women report that the cost is a small investment toward improving their quality of life. In some instances, patients have reported overall savings due to no longer having to pay for expensive estrogen creams.
