Ask Sofia: Is it safe to take CBD during pregnancy?

CBD is everywhere these days, prompting more pregnant and breastfeeding women to ask: Is it safe for me and my baby?

While CBD or cannabidiol is touted for everything from pain relief to better sleep to stress reduction, experts strongly recommend that women avoid it entirely while trying to get pregnant and during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to all of the unknowns. CBD does not make you high (unlike THC, another well-known cannabis compound), however, that does not render it safe.

Recent studies indicate that CBD use during pregnancy may affect baby’s brain and immune system development and can increase the chances of stillbirth and premature birth. Likewise, taking it during pregnancy may result in short-term memory issues, paranoia, injuries and mood issues.

“We have a lot to learn about CBD and pregnancy and breastfeeding, which is why its  use is strongly discouraged during these times,” said Physician Assistant Sarah Iverson. “We know that THC can pass to infants through breastmilk and it is believed the same can happen with CBD. If you have questions about any of these studies or what is and isn’t considered safe during pregnancy, please let us know!”

In addition, the FDA has received reports of cannabidiol being contaminated with pesticides, bacteria, fungus, heavy metals and more, presenting additional concerns for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
