Ask Sofia: What are the signs of a thyroid disorder?

The thyroid gland itself is relatively small, but it can impact your entire body – everything from your metabolism to your heartbeat to weight and energy. Located in the neck, the thyroid produces hormones that influence your body’s metabolic processes – too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism) can make you feel restless and anxious while too little (hypothyroidism) can lead to fatigue. Women are more likely to suffer from a thyroid disorder than men, particularly after pregnancy and menopause – and nearly 15 million “silent sufferers” have an undiagnosed condition, according to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. Once diagnosed, however, most thyroid issues can be treated and managed.

Symptoms and signs can range widely based on the issue – when it comes to hypothyroidism, weight gain, sensitivity to cold, dry skin and hair, heavy periods, joint pain and weakness are common symptoms, and can lead into depression, confusion and swelling if the thyroid disorder is not diagnosed. On the other hand, symptoms of hyperthyroidism include sweating, diarrhea, anxiety, bulging eyes, sensitivity to heat and sleeplessness.

“If you know that something isn’t quite right, whether you don’t feel refreshed no matter how much you sleep or your hands have suddenly started shaking, talk to your doctor. Through blood tests, scans and ultrasound, we can take a closer look at what’s going on, try to pinpoint the issue and create a treatment plan so that you can start feeling better,” said Dr. Jewelia Wagner.

While the causes of thyroid disorders are hard to pinpoint, genetics, pregnancy, stress, environmental issues and autoimmune disorders can all affect the thyroid.
